Sticking with It Despite Setbacks -my unicycle lesson for life

These days, the fast and constant availability of everything and everyone has made us used to being impatient especially with ourselves. We expect results instantly, and when something doesn't work on the first try, we give up quickly. My own journey shows just how much real perseverance can achieve.

In short: skill isn't built from talent alone, but through patience, repetition, and how you deal with setbacks. A story from my childhood taught me that early on and it still shapes how I work as a personal trainer today.

My first steps in children's circus

As a child, I was active in sports early on and took regular lessons at a children's circus school. There was an incredible amount to learn and discover there but three hours a week definitely wasn't enough to, for example, learn to ride a unicycle.

The wish to ride a tall bike

Early on, I'd set my mind on riding a tall bike, just like the older girls. But back then, there had been an accident while riding a tall bike, which is why the instructors wouldn't simply let younger kids like me, at age 7 get on one.

Daily practice along the fence

So every day I went outside and practiced riding the unicycle along the fence, to become more confident. I invested 20 minutes a day to learn the movement and the skill. Over the following months, I made great progress. Along the way, I fell often, lost my balance, and got frustrated with myself for only making it a few meters at first.

From unicycle to tall Bike

Through practice and persistence, I was later able to ride backwards, cover long distances, and do jumps on the unicycle. These skills eventually led me to learn how to ride the tall bike as well.

“Now do It another 10,000 times”

As a child, I was once told: “Okay, you did it well once now do it another 10,000 times, and then you'll slowly master it.” That sentence was incredibly helpful for my development, because it made clear to me that real understanding and mastery would take countless repetitions and a lot of time and that this is completely normal.

What I take from this into my coaching

Through my own experiences in life, in sport, and in coaching, I now have a strong foundation to guide you personally and individually. I've had many setbacks and many difficulties and today I'm a positive, upbeat person with a strong sense of empathy for others. And most importantly: I love working with people.
